Uncle Shurwayne Winchester and his Soca friends gave the children of Tobago along with their parents and guardians a musical treat at the annual Children’s Show which was held at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet last Saturday. The Tobago-born Winchester, whose rise in the Soca music world has been phenomenal over the years, has never forgotten his roots. He has been hosting the annual children’s event in collaboration with both government and corporate sponsorship for the last six years.
This year the sponsors included the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Division of Culture and Community Development, the Ministry of Tobago Development and bmobile. There were also a host of side-activities for the children including face-painting fun, go-cart racing, and bouncy castles. When it was time for the show featuring several top Soca artistes including Uncles Benjai, Shal Marshall, Swappi, Bungi and Aunty Fay-Ann, the children were invited from the covered stands to stage side by Winchester.
“This show is for you and I want all of you to come down here close to us, so we could all have a good time together,” he announced. The children did not need a second invitation as they rushed down onto the mundo track in front of the stage to jump, wave and dance as each Soca artiste belted out their latest Carnival hits. A few brave ones even ventured on stage to challenge their more illustrious entertainers with dance routines of their own. Tobago News Adamson Charles was right on spot to capture all the highlights of the after-Carnival event.
